Eliza Pinkney, an enterprising young woman who developed the dye indigo, a major cash crop in colonial South Carolina, lived in the 1700's.  Being a devote Christian, she wrote the following resolutions that she would read each morning.   They demonstrate a serious intention to obey the command in scripture to work out our salvation in fear and trembling:

Of course we all fail to live up to our resolutions.   Thus we see our need for Christ and the call for repentance.   Further the resolutions focus us for duty and make us less vulnerable to the evil one who wants to distract us.
